A California high school's message benches were intended to encourage student self-expression. Now students are complaining school administrators painted over what they expressed.
On Monday, seniors at La Jolla High School in San Diego painted the message “Freedom For Iran” on the benches. But on Wednesday the message was erased by the school, FOX 5 San Diego reports.
"We thought that because of the recent protests in Iran the past week, we thought it'd be a good time for us to go out there and do this," said Yasamin, a senior at the school. "We didn't know that the school would have a problem."
According to the student, vulgar and inappropriate messages were written on the benches before – to which the school reacted indifferently. She said a member of the school faculty was offended by the Iran message, which led to its removal.
But school officials say the benches were intended for positive and school-related messages.
