A 10-year-old girl who lost consciousness after riding a roller coaster at a southern California amusement park died over the weekend, coroner's officials said Monday.
Ed Winter, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County coroner's office, said Jasmine Martinez, of Somis, Calif., died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Winter said a cause of death has not been determined and an autopsy was pending.
Officials at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, Calif. said Martinez had just gotten off the looping Revolution roller coaster when she lost consciousness Friday afternoon. She was later airlifted to a local hospital, then transferred to Cedars-Sinai.
The Los Angeles Times reported that park officials initially reopened the ride for visitors after Martinez was taken off unconscious. However, in the wake of the girl's death, the paper reports that the ride has been closed again while the incident is reviewed.
"There is no evidence to suggest that this was in any way ride related," the park said," according to the Times. "We do not know if [Jasmine had] a pre-existing condition."
The Revolution has been at the park since 1976. The 113-foot-high looping steel coaster reaches speeds of 55 mph during a two-minute ride.
