A review of confidential Boy Scouts of America files finds that the organization failed to report child molesters within its ranks to police, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The newspaper looked at 1,600 files, dating from 1970-1991, and found 400 cases of scouting officials not reporting alleged abuse from employees and volunteers.
In other cases, the organization hid the alleged abuse and allowed the suspects to leave quietly, citing reasons such as “chronic brain dysfunction” or work-related demands.
The internal documents are part of Boy Scouts of America’s “perversion files,” a blacklist of alleged molesters that lawyers have been trying to hide from public, the Los Angeles Times reports.
