DAVIS, Calif. – A 13-year-old boy who was seriously injured by falling bricks during the earthquake that struck California wine country says he initially feared he'd been paralyzed and feels lucky to be alive.
Nicholas Dillon's pelvis was fractured in several places when part of a fireplace collapsed onto him while he was sleeping in his family's Napa living room when the quake struck.
Nicholas spoke to the San Francisco Chronicle from bed Tuesday at UC Davis Children's Hospital.
He says he couldn't feel his legs or his back when the bricks first fell on him early Sunday.
He says he thinks he escaped greater injury or death because he tried scooting toward the door when the shaking started.
Nicholas spent 10 hours in surgery and is now listed in fair condition.
