Authorities are investigating the apparent drowning of a 13-year-old Massachusetts boy in a pond where swimming is barred.

Police received a report of a swimmer in distress in the Lynn Woods Reservation in Saugus just before 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Essex district attorney's office says the boy, from Lynn, had been in the water with a group of friends and was having difficulty swimming.

The body of water is known as Walden Pond, though it is not the one in Concord made famous by author Henry David Thoreau.

Emergency personnel located the boy around 2:30 p.m. and tried to resuscitate him. The boy was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. No foul play is suspected.
