The State Board of Higher Education has unanimously voted to fire University of Oregon President Richard Lariviere effective Dec. 28.

Board members voted 12 to 0 on Monday to oust Lariviere, saying they have lost trust and confidence in his ability to lead the university. Lariviere was hired in 2009 and has publicly clashed with the Board and with Gov. John Kitzhaber, who says Lariviere's advocacy for the UO has undermined other universities.

News of Lariviere's ouster has sparked an outcry among some lawmakers, faculty and students in Eugene who say he has elevated the university's stature and fought hard to improve it.

Lariviere had said he would stay until his contract expires in June, but the board voted to fire him sooner.
