NEW YORK – Imprisoned financier Bernard Madoff's former secretary and a computer programmer are set to be sentenced in New York.
Former secretary Annette Bongiorno and programmer Jerome O'Hara learn their fate on Tuesday, a day after Madoff's longtime director of operations was sentenced to a decade in prison.
Prosecutors say in court papers that the 66-year-old Bongiorno for four decades was "at the very heart of the fraud." They say O'Hara had a lesser role. They are seeking more than 20 years in prison for Bongiorno, saying she had a key role in cheating thousands of investors of billions of dollars.
In a sentencing submission, Bongiorno's lawyers suggested she serve eight to 10 years in prison, saying there were significant parts of the fraud she knew nothing about.
