A Connecticut bail bondswoman who fatally shot her boyfriend as he was driving in what she insists was self-defense has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The Hartford Courant reports (http://cour.at/1TRu0eK) 29-year-old Angela Grasso was handed the sentence Wednesday in Hartford.

In court, the Plainville resident said she was "deeply sorry," but she insisted her actions were out of "mortal fear" for her family's life.

Authorities say Grasso shot 23-year-old Jose Mendez in the head on April 9, 2014, in West Hartford.

Grasso says Mendez accused her of cheating on him and repeatedly threatened to kill her and her family.

A jury convicted Grasso in February of manslaughter but acquitted her of murder. She had faced up to 40 years in prison.
