Ax flies off truck on highway, smashes through car windshield

An ax flew off a dump truck in Massachusetts Wednesday morning, crashing through the windshield of a car and missing the passenger’s head by just a few inches, reported.

"If it had had any more inertia behind it, or if they were traveling a little faster, then one could speculate that the ax would've gone through," Joseph Risteen, a state trooper, told the station.

The Rhode Island couple was driving behind a dump truck on Route 95 in Topsfield, which is north of Boston. The unsecured ax became loose, flew off the truck, and got lodged blade-first into the windshield. The truck driver reportedly told police that he forgot about the ax in the back of the truck.

Police did not identify the couple or the truck driver, but he was issued a $200 fine. The ax was returned.
