Authorities in Florida say sheriff's deputies fatally shot a man who lunged at them with a knife when they responded to a domestic violence call from his mother.

Pasco County Sheriff's spokeswoman Melanie Snow said in a news release early Friday that the caller said 56-year-old Stephen Steele had assaulted his girlfriend and threatened to "slice" deputies "before they could Taser him" if she called for help.

As deputies arrived at the home Thursday night, Snow says Steele ran from the home to a camper parked nearby. He yelled through a window that he planned to cut himself and made cutting motions along his throat.

When deputies tried to enter the camper, Steele lunged toward them and deputies fired at Steele who died at a hospital.

An investigation continues. No further details were available.
