Authorities outside Atlanta say four children, including an infant, are dead after their mother and rescuers tried to save them from a house fire.

The fire burned late Tuesday night at a duplex in Conyers, east of Atlanta. There were seven people in the home at the time the fire broke out.

The mother of the children reportedly rushed upstairs to try and rescue the kids, but was only able to save her 6-year-old. She threw him from the second-floor window.

Glenn Allen, a spokesman for Georgia's fire commissioner, tells The Associated Press the mother was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta with second- and third-degree burns. She reportedly had burns over 40 percent of her body.

Conyers police Major Mike Waters told reporters the children who died range in age from the infant to 7 years old.

"There was one neighbor that tried his best to get in a rear window but the flames were too strong, and there was no way he could get in," police said.

Allen says there's no indication to what caused the blaze.
