Arizona Gov. Brewer bruised by ignored child abuse complaints at agency she made a priority

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is being bruised by revelations that her administration ignored thousands of child abuse and neglect reports.

So far, she is rejecting calls for her to replace her hand-picked leader of the state's social services agency.

But critics of the Republican governor say the failures show her administration continues to shortchange kids.

Brewer has made reforming Child Protective Services a top priority in the past several years. She personally took credit for overhauling the child abuse hotline system in a January speech to the state Legislature.

But the team put in place at CPS was instead simply closing thousands of cases.

Now, the chorus of criticism of those ignored reports is coming from both Democrats and members of Brewer's own party.
