UPPER TOWNSHIP, N.J.- An anti-terrorism fence erected near the Great Egg Harbor Bridge on the southern New Jersey coast will come down and won't be replaced after a bridge reconstruction project gets under way next year.
The chain-link fence with barbed wire was built near the Garden State Parkway bridge for a quarter-million dollars. State Sen. Jeff Van Drew, who lobbied for its removal, says the much-maligned fence marred scenic views over the bay and salt marshes.
Turnpike Authority spokesman Tom Feeney says the bridge was identified as one of the most vulnerable major bridges on either the Turnpike or Parkway and was one of 10 to get security fences. But he tells the Press of Atlantic City the new bridge will be constructed in a way that is secure without fencing.
