OAK CREEK, Wis. – Members of the Wisconsin Sikh (seek') temple where a white supremacist killed six worshippers a year ago have wrapped up their anniversary events with an emotional candlelight vigil.
About 1,000 people gathered Monday night at the Sikh Temple of Milwaukee. They held candles as speakers urged them to help wage peace.
Several victims' relatives gave anguished eulogies recalling the pain of last year's attack.
Fifteen-year-old Gurvinder Singh broke down in tears while recalling his late father, Ranjit (run-JEET') Singh. Relatives of other victims hugged him and asked attendees to extend their candlelight toward him for strength. Gurvinder offered tearful thanks.
Oak Creek Mayor Stephen Scaffidi (skuh-FEE'-dee) praised his city's 35,000 residents for loving and supporting their Sikh neighbors. He says Oak Creek is a model for all other communities.
