An Alabama veteran who walks miles to see his wife at a nursing home was highlighted in a recent Facebook post written by a lieutenant for the local police department.

Army veteran James Wright, 70, of Etowah County, started walking to the nursing home after his truck broke down to see his wife. Wright described her as “the most beautiful woman in the world,” according to WVTM 13.

Charles Plitt, a lieutenant for the Weaver Police Department, said Wright stopped him while he was driving on Thursday for help, according to WSB-TV. The veteran, who recently had suffered a stroke, told the off-duty cop that he needed to see his wife but could not walk anymore.
Plitt drove Wright to the nursing home and along the way the two talked. Wright told Plitt about his 22 years in the Army and fighting in Vietnam. Plitt thanked him for his service.
“These veterans deserve a lot more recognition and commemoration than they get,” Plitt told WVTM.

Plitt wrote about the encounter on the Weaver Police Department’s Facebook page and described what Memorial Day meant to him after the exchange.
“James is one of many living testaments as to what really matters on this Memorial day weekend,” Plitt wrote.
The community is reportedly helping Wright get his truck fixed.
For now, Wright said he will walk while he still can to see his wife.
