NEW YORK – The pope's visit to New York City later this month will likely raise security issues and costs to new heights in a city where protecting a dignitary is an art and a point of pride.

New York Police Commissioner William Bratton says local, state and federal law enforcement face an "unprecedented challenge," particularly on Sept. 25. That's when Francis will address over 160 heads of state at the United Nations, preside over a 9/11 memorial service, ride through Central Park and celebrate Mass at Madison Square Garden.

Airport-style security will greet those hoping to get a glimpse of the pope in his stops in New York, Washington and Philadelphia. Residents can expect road closures and other inconveniences during the four-day visit.
