SOUTH FORK, Colo. – Residents and visitors are being allowed back to the southwestern Colorado town of South Fork, a week after they were forced to evacuate by a massive wildfire.
The evacuation was lifted Friday since firefighters feel confident they could defend the summer retreat should the fire again advance toward it. They've dug a wide bulldozer line they can expand if that happens and have also been dropping water along the highway leading to the town all week.
The town relies on tourism during so business owners there have been anxious to reopen.
The West Fork Fire, one of a trio burning in the area, is within about 3 miles of the town. Residents are being asked to remain aware of any changes in the fire or new fires started by lightning.
