9-year-old girl loses hand, fingers after fireworks accident in California

Authorities in Southern California said Sunday a 9-year-old girl lost her left hand and fingers on her right hand in an explosion that was likely caused by illegal fireworks.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the explosion occurred Saturday at around 12:30 p.m. at a Compton park. The girl sustained blast injuries to her face as well.

Officials said she was taken to a hospital where her left hand was amputated.

She is listed in stable condition.

No arrests have been made and the incident is under investigation, according to the Los Angeles Times.
