A family seriously injured last year on a North Carolina State Fair ride is suing its operators and owners.

Attorney Willie Gary said Thursday he's seeking at least $25,000 in damages for the four people injured on the Vortex, a ride known for its twirls and flips.

Anthony Gorham, Kisha Gorham, their 14-year-old son and a niece were tossed off the Vortex in October when the machine suddenly lurched into motion as they were trying to get off.

A criminal investigation found a safety mechanism designed to keep the Vortex from moving had been disabled. The ride's operator and owner are also facing assault charges.

Named as defendants were Powers Great American Midways; Family Attractions Amusement; Joshua Gene Macaroni; and Timothy Tutterrow.

Company officials didn't immediately return messages Thursday.
