GILROY, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol says four people died when the car they were riding in veered off a road, hit the bank of a canal and rolled down a ravine in Northern California.
Officer Justin Maier tells San Francisco news station KTVU-TV that the car flipped in the air after hitting the canal bank, landed on its roof and rolled about 20 feet to the bottom of the ravine around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in Gilroy, about 30 miles south of San Jose.
Rescuers cut the roof off the vehicle, finding three female passengers and one male passenger dead. They all appeared to be under 25 years old.
The driver suffered major injuries but is expected to survive.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
