COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four death-row inmates who are suing Ohio officials over a new state law that shields the names of companies providing lethal injection drugs want a federal court to prevent the rules from taking effect in March.
Attorneys for the inmates filed the motion in federal court in Columbus on Monday.
One of the attorneys says in a statement that the law is designed to shut down only one side of debate on the issue. Attorney Timothy Sweeney claims it violates the constitutional right to free speech.
A message was left Monday at Attorney General Mike DeWine's office.
The four inmates filed a lawsuit last month challenging the constitutionality of the new law. Supporters of the policy say it is necessary for the state to get supplies by protecting drugmakers from harassment.
