Police say four men are dead and five others taken to a hospital after their vehicle collided with a semi-truck at an intersection near Fresno.

California Highway Patrol officer Brian Wendland says the crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m. Friday about 12 miles east of the city, in the community of Reedley.

The Fresno Bee reports that the men were aboard a van that struck the front of the truck, which was turning off American Avenue onto another road.

Wedland tells the paper that five other men in the van were taken to a hospital, but there were no details about injuries.

The truck driver was unhurt.

The road was closed near the crash site but was expected to reopen sometime Saturday morning.
