Arkansas State University says three students are missing in a cave near Cushman.

A university statement says student Casey Sherwood's wife reported him and Japanese exchange students Daiki Itoh and Daisuke Takagi missing to university police Wednesday night.

Police contacted the Independence County Sheriff's Office, prompting a search of an area known as Blowing Cave, in a heavily wooded area about 110 miles north of Little Rock.

A university spokeswoman had no information on the ages and hometowns of the students.

Independence County Office of Emergency Management coordinator Glen Willis told KAIT-TV that two crews are searching for the students and a group from Lyon College in Batesville that maps caves is assisting.

Willis and sheriff's officials did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.
