MONTPELIER, Vt. – A second criminal trial is set to begin in what started as a custody dispute between two women joined in a Vermont civil union and is now a conspiracy that reaches into Central America.
Jury selection is scheduled to begin in Buffalo on Sept. 20 in the trial of a Virginia businessman charged with helping Lisa Miller and her daughter Isabella escape first to Canada and then Nicaragua amid the custody battle.
Philip Zodhiates (zo-dee-YA-taze) is charged with international parental kidnapping stemming from the 2009 flight.
Miller and Isabella are still believed to be in Nicaragua.
Miller and Janet Jenkins of Fair Haven, Vermont, dissolved their civil union and Miller left when it seemed likely that her former partner would gain custody of the child born during their time together.
