SALEM, Mass. – Some Florida dogs who escaped Hurricane Isaac this week will be up for adoption in Massachusetts.
Workers at the C Dog Run animal shelter in Florida's Panhandle were concerned about the storm damage and power outages Hurricane Isaac might bring, so they evacuated 28 dogs before the storm and sent them to the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Mass.
Efforts to move the at-risk dogs were part of a Dogs Across America program, which rescues shelter animals in need. The C Dog Run volunteers organized a life-saving caravan and drove the pets some 350 miles from Florida to Georgia. The Puppy Pipeline animal rescue group, which helps transport pets, then drove all night from Georgia to Salem. The NAS website says it used portable cages and all available facility space to make room for the new refugee dogs.
The NAS reports all the dogs arrived safely and are ready for rescue families. It's one of New England's largest nonprofit shelters and does not destroy any of the pets entrusted to its care. The lucky pups will be available for adoption at the shelter starting Saturday.
There have been several other animal rescue efforts in Louisiana and Mississippi as a result of Hurricane Isaac this week, according to the ASPCA website.
