Police say a 23-year-old New York state trooper has collapsed and died after a basic-training run.

State police say Trooper Donald R. Fredenburg, of Utica, collapsed Friday morning about a quarter-mile into a daily physical training run at the University at Albany campus. Fredenburg was in his second week of training at the adjacent New York State Police Academy.

Academy staffers were able to restart his heart with an automated external defibrillator, but he later died at a hospital.

Fredenburg served as a U.S. Marine from 2009 until 2013.

He's survived by his wife, Angela, and his parents. Funeral arrangements are pending.
