Two police officers were shot and a suspect in another fatal shooting was killed during a gunfight in North Carolina on Saturday night.
A woman also suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the episode.
Cops responded to a 911 call from a son in Gastonia who said his father had just been shot and the gunman was still in the house, the Gaston Gazette reported. The father later died.
Police were reportedly confronted near an intersection by a man with a shotgun and a pistol.
“Upon arrival, officers were confronted with a suspect who was armed,” Assistant Police Chief Joseph Ramey said. “That suspect engaged officers. Two officers were shot. They have non-life-threatening injuries. The suspected shooter was shot and killed by officers.”
Ramsey said anywhere up to seven officers returned fire on the gunman.
The identities of those involved in the shootout have not been released and police wouldn’t speculate on a motive.
The two officers who were shot were both wounded in their “lower extremities,” according to Ramey, who also noted that one was a veteran officer and the other was newer to the force.
Gastonia is a small town located about 24 miles west of Charlotte.
