SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Hundreds of people, including many in period costume, have crowded into a train station in the Illinois capital to watch a replica of Abraham Lincoln's coffin be carried off a funeral car.
It's the start of a weekend of events to meticulously re-enact the slain president's funeral in his hometown of Springfield.
A reconstruction of the funeral train car drew hundreds of people to the city's Amtrak station Saturday. It was surrounded by an honor guard of men in Union army garb.
The crowd included many men in top hats and ladies carrying parasols.
Bob Churchill of Riverton, Illinois, said, "Lincoln is a magnet to draw all types of people together for the common good," something that he said is needed with the upheaval over police shootings around the country.
