Authorities say one woman is dead following a small plane crash in the Atlantic Ocean near New Smyrna Beach, Fla.

A single-engine aircraft, described as a Cessna 152, went down around 9 p.m., according to a statement made by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Emergency unites arrived shortly finding the plane's wreckage about 20 feet off shore, police said.

Authorities conducted an extensive search for the wreckage and additional victims.

The details about the plane's flight path are unknown at this time, police say. The woman took off from New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport, which is about three miles inland.

There was also a dense fog in the area at the time of the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will be responding to investigate the cause of the crash.
