Snack attack: American Airlines changes makeup of its nuts

Bad nut puns aside, American Airlines announced in a newsletter to employees that the company has changed the makeup of its onboard nut composition due to fluctuating prices of nuts from around the world.

American Airlines vice president for flight service Hector Adler said in the newsletter, obtained by airline insider Brian Sumers, “Our passengers are very astute. It’s true that there have been more cashews in the mix. Nuts are a commodity and are subject to forces of supply and demand, and earlier this year almond prices were on the rise, resulting in a larger percentage of cashews in the ramekins.”

For the cashew enthusiasts out there, don’t get too excited, though. Adler said that the nut market has once again changed and the blend will feature more almonds and pecans this year and fewer cashews.

Don’t even get me started on the lack of pistachios.

The newsletter from Adler also revealed other news from the company, including a move to a cashless cabin in all of the company’s regional jets. Almost all of the company’s fleet is already credit-card only, but American Eagle airline flights still take cash.

While American Airlines has accepted different policies for American Eagle in the past, the company is looking to make a more uniform travel experience for customers using all of the brands under its umbrella.
