Concern Closer to Home?

Muslims across the world are expressing outrage over those now-infamous Danish cartoons. And some American Muslims are raising concerns about one depiction of the prophet inside the Supreme Court.

A sculpture of Muhammed is included among 18 stone "lawgivers" that have adorned the building since it opened in 1935. It depicts the prophet with a Koran in one hand and a sword in the other.

Mass Resignation

Four editors at an alternative New York paper have resigned over their publisher's decision not to print the cartoons. The editor-in-chief of the libertarian New York Press, says the paper, "suborned its own professed principles" by ordering the cartoons to be pulled at the last minute.

He called it "nakedly hypocritical to avoid the same cartoons we'd criticized others for not running."

Courting Controversy

The Danish newspaper editor behind the original publication of those cartoons says he's reached out to an Iranian paper that's soliciting offensive depictions of the Holocaust and plans to publish those drawings.

Flemming Rose says the Iranian newspaper contest — meant to test whether European nations extend the same principles of freedom of expression to cartoons about Nazi genocide — speaks to "the problem of self-censorship and freedom of speech" that he was addressing with the cartoons of Muhammad.

Nobel Nod

Controversial U.N. Ambassador John Bolton has been nominated for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize. A former Swedish official put up Bolton for playing a major role in exposing Iran's nuclear program. The ambassador was given a recess appointment to the U.N. after Senate Democrats blocked him.

Discouraging Cindy

And California Senator Barbara Boxer is urging anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan not to run for the Senate this year, saying Sheehan is "more valuable out there, not as a candidate." Sheehan says she's leaning toward challenging California's other Democratic senator, Dianne Feinstein, in the June primary over Feinstein's vote to authorize the use of force in Iraq.

But Boxer tells California reporters, "I don't think having her in the Senate election helps her at all."
