Did Bart Corbin Kill His Wife?

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, HOST: We’re expecting an announcement from the lawyers for the Georgia dentist under arrest. A press conference is scheduled for 10:00 AM Thursday. Dr. Barton Corbin was charged with the 1990 shooting death of his former lover, but has not been charged with his wife’s December 4 death.

Joining us from Atlanta is Jennifer Corbin's (search) sister, Rajel Caldwell, and her father, Max Barber. Rajel, first your reaction Wednesday night to the fact that your brother-in-law has now been arrested from a girlfriend from about 14 years ago.

RAJEL CALDWELL, SISTER OF JENNIFER CORBIN: Greta, I have some mixed emotions to the arrest of Bart. He was a family member for us, and it was very hard to see that on the television this afternoon. And that’s really how I feel at this point. We love our — we loved my sister very much, and it’s very hard to realize that this man was arrested for something very similar to that from many years ago.

VAN SUSTEREN: Max, this terrible killing or death of your daughter occurred on Saturday, December 4, and your son-in-law was notified. And I’m sort of curious as to his conduct after notification. Did he call his two young sons or come gather them upon notification that their mother was dead?

MAX BARBER, FATHER OF JENNIFER CORBIN: Not at all, Greta. I was the first family member there at about 5 minutes until 9:00. I waited — I was told by the authorities that Bart was on the way, would be there between 15 and 30 minutes. I waited for three hours. He never showed up.

I went back to the authorities two or three times. First I went back to get clothes for my grandchildren, and then I went back a second time to find out when they expected Bart to show up at the home. He never came, never made a phone call, never spoke to any member — he’s never spoken to a member of the Barber Tierney Caldwell family since Jenny’s death. We have not heard from him. We do get a few calls from his brother, who has called regarding the funeral arrangements, who made a phone call regarding a conversation with the other grandmother of the grandchildren. This happened about a week ago. But no, Bart’s made no attempt.

VAN SUSTEREN: Rajel, I guess — I mean, the fact is, I mean, that the two of them were in the process of getting a divorce and had a very unhappy marriage, apparently, leading up to the death, but they are nonetheless his two boys who are suddenly motherless on December 4. Is there anything, Rajel, that sticks out in your mind about his conduct, Dr. Barton’s conduct on or about December 4, either before she died or right after she died?

CALDWELL: Yes. We had a — we actually had a wonderful family dinner for Thanksgiving, and we noticed — I personally noticed a few things that were a little disturbing in regard to Bart’s behavior. Jen had come back to the house that evening and had spent the night at my sister, Heather’s, home because of the events that brought her back to the house that afternoon after they had left the home. And Jen and I had talked that evening, sitting on the sofa, and she had expressed some concerns to me, but nothing that would have ever have made me thought that this is where I would be right now.

VAN SUSTEREN: What about, Max? I know there’s also — there was maybe a man involved, an Internet man, for your daughter. I know it’s a sensitive topic, but any — that relationship have any bearing on this?

BARBER: I don’t think it has any bearing on the direct evidence, Greta. Yes, she did have an Internet program. She loved to play Internet games. I understand that she had a close friend that she developed a relationship with on the computer. There’s more to that story, or there’s less to that story. I’m not sure. I’ve heard so little about it that — as the father of the deceased, yes, I’d like to stand up and fight for her. But if she was reaching out to someone else, that’s fine. I have no concerns about that.

VAN SUSTEREN: All right, Rajel, Max, thank you very much. I appreciate you talking to us this evening. we’re going to keep a close eye on this developing story and will update you tomorrow night on the announcement from the dentist’s lawyers.
