Toshiba Corp's (TOSBF) U.S. subsidiary recalled 142,000 AC adapters sold with portable DVD players because they may overheat when they fail, potentially burning the user, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Tuesday.

The recall comes after excessive heat damaged two DVD players, the commission said.

The DVD players, distributed by Toshiba America Consumer Products LLC, of Wayne, N.J., were sold between January 2005 and April 2006 at consumer electronics stores throughout the United States.

The recall involves AC adapter model ADPV16 sold with portable DVD player model SD-P1600 for between $200 and $230, the agency said.

Consumers with that model adapter should stop using the AC adapter immediately and contact Toshiba for a replacement.

A photograph of the recalled adapter was posted by the agency on its Web site at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml08/08015.html.
