Tokyo, Japan (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of former world No. 1s had different results on Thursday, as Caroline Wozniacki advanced while Jelena Jankovic was sent packing at the $1 million Pan Pacific Open women's tennis event.
The second-seeded Wozniacki came from behind to beat Aussie qualifier Jarmila Gajdosova 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, while promising Spaniard Garbine Muguruza ousted the fourth-seeded Jankovic 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 on the hardcourts at Ariake Coliseum.
This month's U.S. Open runner-up Wozniacki was the Pan Pacific champ in 2010, while Jankovic was the runner-up in Tokyo back in 2009.
The resurgent Wozniacki has now won 20 of her last 24 matches, including a title in Istanbul.
Also on Thursday, eighth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro topped Russian qualifier Daria Gavrilova 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 and Aussie Casey Dellacqua handled qualifier Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 6-2, 6-4.
Friday's quarterfinals will pit top-seeded Angelique Kerber against sixth- seeded Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova; Wozniacki versus Suarez Navarro; third-seeded Ana Ivanovic against seventh-seeded Czech Lucie Safarova; and Dellacqua versus Muguruza. The German Kerber was last year's Tokyo runner-up to fellow left-hander Petra Kvitova. The former top-ranked star Ivanovic was the runner-up in Tokyo in 2007.
This week's champion will collect $196,670.
