Wings G Howard out with MCL sprain

Detroit, MI ( - Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard is expected to miss the next 2-to-4 weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee.

Wings general manager Ken Holland confirmed to the Detroit Free Press on Friday that the Maine product injured himself during a Wednesday practice session in Tampa. Jonas Gustavsson got the start in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Lightning on Thursday.

The injury is likely to jeopardize Howard's participation in the Winter Classic against the Maple Leafs on Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium, and will also call into question his selection for Team USA at the upcoming Sochi Winter Olympics.

Howard is just 6-8-7 with a 2.65 goals-against average and two shutouts in 21 games this season.

The Red Wings also made roster moves Friday, recalling forwards Patrick Eaves and Luke Glendening from Grand Rapids of the AHL and assigning forward Cory Emmerton to the Griffins.
