CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Trey Sumler scored 19 points to lead all five Western Carolina starters in double figures as the Catamounts held off North Carolina-Greensboro 83-73 on Saturday.
Sumler hit 5 of 7 3-pointers for Western Carolina (11-13, 7-5 Southern Conference), which stretched its home winning streak to nine games, seven this season.
Western Carolina never trailed and held a 16-point lead, at 60-44, with 14:12 to go.
The Spartans (4-18, 4-8), who came in having won four of their last six games — with both losses coming in overtime — then went on a 15-0 run. Brandon Evans, who finished with 21 points, scored the last 12 in the spurt to get to 60-59 with 8:49 left.
Mutombo's two free throws ended the Catamounts' drought and sparked a 12-4 run.
