STATESBORO, Ga. – Trey Sumler scored 23 points and had six assists as Western Carolina defeated Georgia Southern 81-58 on Wednesday night to snap a six-game losing streak.
The Catamounts (4-10, 1-2 Southern Conference) hadn't won since defeating Bradley 66-65 on Nov. 30.
Richie Gordon added 18 points as Western Carolina shot 55.4 percent from the field (31 of 56) to send Georgia Southern (4-12, 0-3) to its fifth loss in six games.
Mike Williams hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Catamounts a 37-21 lead with 4:26 left in the first half. Sumler's two free throws gave Western Carolina a 44-24 advantage with 2:13 to play.
Georgia Southern's Jelani Hewitt hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 50-33 with 18:38 left in the game, but that was as close as the Eagles would get.
Williams scored 12 points and Brandon Boggs added 10.
Eric Ferguson led Georgia Southern with 21 points.
