Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - D.C. United announced on Monday that the club has secured the services of Finland international Markus Halsti from Swedish side Malmo.

The 30-year-old Halsti is a versatile addition to the team as he can play in midfield or defense, and he brings with him the experience of having played in the Champions League as well as on the international level.

"We are pleased to be adding a player with solid European playing experience at the club, Champions League, and national team levels," D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper said of Halsti. "Markus can play as both a central midfielder and central defender, and this was quite attractive to us. He is a tough competitor and another very good character piece for our club. We look forward to having him join our family."

Halsti joined Malmo in 2008 and went on to win three league titles in five seasons with the club, including the 2014 campaign in which he started 21 of 26 games.

On the international level, Halsti has earned 20 caps for Finland since making his debut in 2008.
