UEFA holds emergency talks on FIFA election contest

NYON, Switzerland (AP) The UEFA executive committee is meeting in an emergency session, 12 hours before the deadline to enter the FIFA presidential contest.

UEFA says the panel is discussing strategy by video conference but declined to discuss details.

A plan for UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino to enter developed in talks with members over the weekend.

UEFA President Michel Platini filed nomination papers before being suspended by FIFA this month and could be barred as a candidate.

An Infantino candidacy could strengthen the Europe-Asia alliance in FIFA politics.

Though Infantino, a Swiss lawyer, would be an outsider to win, he is a strong contender to be appointed FIFA secretary general.
