STORRS, Conn. (AP) UConn has added a guard from New York City to its highly touted 2016-17 recruiting class.

The school announced Wednesday that Christian Vital, a 6-foot-2 combination guard from Queens Village, New York, has signed a national letter of intent.

Vital had originally committed to UNLV, but changed his mind after Dave Rice's departure as coach.

Vital averaged 16.2 points last season at St. Thomas More preparatory school in Oakdale, Connecticut, helping that team to the National Prep Championship finals.

Coach Kevin Ollie says besides being a great basketball player, Vital is an outstanding leader and with great character.

He joins a class that already includes forwards Mamadou Diarra from Queens, Vance Jackson from Altedena, California, Juwan Durham from Tampa, Florida, and guard Alterique Gilbert from Lithonia, Georgia.
