New York, NY – Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and Players of the Week for the period ending September 18.
Verlander went 2-0 in two scoreless starts in the period, striking out 12 batters while walking just five through 15 innings to earn his third weekly award of the season and the fifth of his career.
He has now won 12 consecutive starts to tie the longest such streak since Johan Santana won 12 straight in 2004. His 24 wins this season are the highest since Randy Johnson won 24 games in 2002.
In six games last week, Aybar hit .455 with four doubles, three home runs and five RBI. In the Angels' 11-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, Aybar went 4-for-4 with a walk, two doubles, two homers, four runs batted in and five runs scored.
It was the first multi-home run game in Aybar's career and his five runs scored were the most by an Angel since Tim Salmon accomplished the feat on April 12, 1998. This is his first career weekly award.
Another notable performance of the week was Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who recorded the 600th and 601st saves of his career to tie Trevor Hoffman for the all-time save record.
