Texas Tech's Mahomes sets Big 12 freshman record with his 598 yards passing in loss to Baylor

Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes owns the best passing day of the season by a quarterback who doesn't play for Washington State.

Mahomes obliterated the Big 12 freshman record with his 598 yards passing in Saturday's 48-46 loss to Baylor. His teammate, Davis Webb, set the previous record of 462 yards against West Virginia last year.

In his last three outings — against Texas, Oklahoma and Baylor — Mahomes is 80 of 150 for 1,304 yards and 14 touchdowns, with two interceptions. Six of those TD passes came against Baylor.

His 598 yards passing were the most by a Texas Tech QB since Graham Harrell threw for 646 in 2007.

The only better passing performances this season were by Connor Halliday (734 yards) and Luke Falk (601), both of Washington State.

Some other notable numbers:

DANDY DONNELL: San Diego State's Donnell Pumphrey had the week's top rushing game, going for a career-high 267 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries against San Jose State. Pumphrey's total was the eighth-highest in program history and the best since Larry Ned ran for 285 yards in 2001. With nine 100-yard games, Pumphrey is tied for most in a season by an Aztec with Ronnie Hillman (2011) and George Jones (1995).

PICKS NOT APLENTY: Northern Illinois' Drew Hare has thrown just one interception in 12 games, the fewest by a full-time FBS starter. Hare hasn't been picked off in 134 attempts over six-plus games. He has completed 60 percent of his passes for 1,879 yards and 15 touchdowns and is the Huskies' leading rusher with 790 yards and seven TDs.

REMEMBER THIS GUY? Former Iowa Hawkeye Brandon Wegher ran for 311 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries in Morningside's 56-28 win over Missouri Valley in the NAIA playoffs. That was only Wegher's second-best game this season. The junior had 327 yards and four TDs against Dakota Wesleyan in October. Wegher's season rushing total is 2,459 yards, which is 45 yards short of the NAIA single-season record.

Hawkeye fans remember Wegher for running for 641 yards and an Iowa freshman-record eight TDs in 2009, a season that included his 113-yard night against Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. Personal reasons led him on his winding path to Morningside in Sioux City, Iowa.

WONDERFUL WESLEY: Wesley College's 59-0 win over MIT in the Division III playoffs forced some revision to the Wolverines' record book. The Delaware school ran its season point total to a record 623, or 52 a game. MIT's six turnovers Saturday gave the Wolverines a record 47 takeaways for the season, including 26 interceptions.

NATIONAL LEADERS: Baylor, averaging 49.8 points, is on track to be the national scoring leader for the second straight year. ... Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon holds a commanding lead in the FBS rushing race, averaging 188.3 yards. Indiana's Tevin Coleman is at 169.7. ... Colorado State's Rashard Higgins is the leader in yards receiving (149.1) and touchdowns (17). ... Arizona's Scooby Wright forced a fumble against Arizona State and leads the nation with six.
