Travele Jones scored 25 points, including six in overtime, and Texas Southern defeated Southern University 81-74 on Tuesday night in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Tigers (3-9) scored the first seven points in overtime capped by Jones' layup with 3:44 left for a 71-64 advantage.

Jones was 7 of 9 from the field, including 2 of 2 from 3-point range and 9 of 12 from the free-throw line. Texas Southern made 4 of 7 from the field (57.1 percent) and 9 of 9 from the free-throw line in overtime.

Lawrence Danner-Johnson added 18 points and Harrison Smith chipped in 14 for the Tigers. Texas Southern outrebounded the Jaguars 48-32 as Kevin Galloway led the way with 13 boards.

Blake Sanford led Southern (1-12) with 21 points. Brandon White and Julius Ingram chipped in 14 points each for the Jaguars and Jameel Grace added 11.
