Milan, Italy – AC Milan could have clinched the third and final Champions League spot on Sunday, but the club was held to a 0-0 draw by Roma, leaving third place up in the air until the final day of the season.
Fiorentina's win over Palermo earlier in the day reduced the Viola's deficit to one point, and Milan was only able to come away with a draw from Sunday's match after having Sulley Muntari sent off in the 41st minute.
Roma created the better of the chances over the course of the contest, but the match was overshadowed by another incident of racist abuse and a bizarre red card for Muntari.
Milan striker Mario Balotelli was the target of racist chanting from Roma supporters, and the match was briefly halted.
The visitors were having the better of the play and things were made worse for Milan in the 41st minute when Muntari was sent off for attempting to prevent the referee from issuing a yellow card to Balotelli for a poor challenge.
Roma was unable to take advantage of the red card, however, and the visitors finished the match with 10 players after Francesco Totti elbowed Milan's Philippe Mexes in stoppage time.
Milan can now clinch third place with a win at Siena next Sunday.
Chievo 1, Torino 1
Verona, Italy - Torino secured its place in Serie A for next season by earning a 1-1 draw at Chievo on Sunday.
The home side went ahead after 10 minutes when Cyril Thereau finished off a pass at close range from Felipe Seymour.
But Torino responded within nine minutes as Angelo Ogbonna was fouled inside the penalty area by Chievo's Dario Dainelli, allowing Alessio Cerci to fire home the subsequent penalty kick.
Chievo goalkeeper Christian Puggioni helped his team hang on for a point with a pair of fine saves in the second half on Cerci and Matteo Brighi.
Fiorentina 1, Palermo 0
Florence, Italy - Palermo was relegated from Serie A on Sunday following a 1-0 defeat to Fiorentina at the Artemio Franchi.
Luca Toni netted the lone goal in the 41st minute when he got on the other end of a low cross from Juan Cuadrado to slide the ball home.
Palermo came within inches of an equalizer in the final 10 minutes, but a header from Ezequiel Munoz narrowly sailed past the post.
The result leaves Palermo five points behind 17th-place Genoa, while Fiorentina is within two points of the Rossoneri.
Genoa 0, Inter Milan 0
Genoa, Italy - Genoa assured itself of a spot in the top flight for next season after earning a 0-0 draw against Inter Milan at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium on Sunday.
The point earned against Inter, combined with Palermo's 1-0 defeat at Fiorentina, leaves Genoa safe for another season, although the home side very easily could have snatched all three points.
Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic produced a pair of fine stops in the first half to keep his side level, while Inter's lone chance of note arrived in the second half when Tommaso Rocchi struck the crossbar.
The result snaps a three-match losing streak for Inter, but the club has managed to claim just four points from its last seven games.
Lazio 2, Sampdoria 0
Rome, Italy - Lazio's push for a Europa League place continued on Sunday with a 2-0 home win against Sampdoria.
Miroslav Klose had a hand in the first goal after 10 minutes when his shot struck the leg of Sergio Floccari and redirected into the net, while Floccari nearly doubled his tally midway through the half after being set up by Klose.
Mauro Icardi struck the crossbar for Sampdoria as the visitors searched for the equalizer, but the match was put to rest in stoppage time when Sampdoria's Daniele Gastadello fouled Ogenyi Onazi inside the penalty area.
Antonio Candreva converted the spot kick, and Lazio will enter the final match of the season two points back of Udinese for fifth place.
Napoli 2, Siena 1
Naples, Italy - Marek Hamsik's stoppage-time goal lifted Napoli to a 2-1 win on Sunday over Siena, which was assured of being relegated.
The visitors took the lead through Fabrizio Grillo in the 36th minute, but Edinson Cavani's league-leading 28th goal leveled the match with 17 minutes remaining.
Genoa's 0-0 draw with Inter Milan earlier in the day had already secured Siena's fate, but the club was unable to hold on for even a point as Hamsik struck deep into added time with a lunging left-footed effort.
Napoli's second-place finish is the club's highest since 1990.
Udinese 2, Atalanta 1
Udine, Italy - Antonio Di Natale's brace kept Udinese on course for a Europa League place as the club notched a 2-1 home victory against Atalanta on Sunday.
The result leaves Udinese two points clear of Lazio for the final Europa League spot, and the club will visit struggling Inter Milan on the final day of the season.
Di Natale struck the crossbar in the fourth minute, but Atalanta grabbed the advantage a few minutes later through Giuseppe De Luca, who scored on the rebound.
Allan set up Di Natale's first goal shortly before halftime, and the striker fired home the winning goal from outside the penalty area, leaving Atalanta goalkeeper Andrea Consigli with little chance.
Bologna 2, Parma 0
Parma, Italy - Goals from Saphir Taider and Davide Moscardelli saw Bologna to a 2-0 win at Parma on Sunday as both sides had little more than pride on the line.
Taider went close with a header in the opening few minutes, and he found the net shortly after that miss by beating goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.
It was one of the few shots that Mirante saw in the match, while his counterpart, Dejan Stojanovic, was busy making a number of saves to keep Bologna in front.
The hosts frustrating afternoon was capped 15 minutes from time when Bologna found the net once more through Moscardelli, whose right-footed effort gave Mirante little chance.
