Columbia, SC – South Carolina freshman wide receiver Damiere game penalty following an appeal by the school.
Byrd received a four-game ban from the NCAA for accepting improper benefits. He had already missed games against East Carolina and Georgia and will sit out games against Navy and Vanderbilt before being reinstated for the October 1 contest against Auburn.
The NCAA levied the penalty after Byrd received benefits during the recruiting process as part of the Student Athlete Mentoring (SAM) Foundation. The SAM program, based in Delaware, helps underprivileged, inner-city players get scholarship offers and meet academic eligibility requirements.
