Luis Suarez made an instant impact on his return from injury Thursday, heading Uruguay into a 1-0 lead over England at halftime in their key World Cup match.

England conceded possession inside its own half, allowing Uruguay to break forward with speed, and Edinson Cavani provided the cross that Suarez nodded over goalkeeper Joe Hart in the 39th minute. Suarez hadn't played for more than a month after undergoing knee surgery.

Wayne Rooney had come closest for England, meeting captain Steven Gerrard's free kick in the 31st minute but only hitting the corner of the goal frame with his header.

England and Uruguay both lost their opening matches in Group D.
