ST. LOUIS (AP) — Coming off consecutive two-error games, St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Brendan Ryan was not in the lineup Thursday for the finale of a three-game series against the Astros.

Rookie Tyler Greene started in place of Ryan, who also was struggling at the plate with a .173 average.

Manager Tony La Russa says a break might benefit Ryan, who batted .292 last year. Defense kept Ryan in the lineup earlier in the season. He committed only three errors during the first 32 games.

Ryan had a throwing error in the second inning Wednesday after making a nice play in the hole on an infield hit by Pedro Feliz. He dropped Humberto Quintero's soft sinking liner in the fourth, a crucial miscue that led to five unearned runs for Houston in a 9-6 victory.
