Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Steelers placed punter Zoltan Mesko on waivers Tuesday while signing veteran Mat McBriar to take his place.

Mesko was ranked last in the AFC with a 42.5 average per kick and was coming off a shaky performance in the Steelers' 21-18 loss at Oakland this past Sunday. The fourth-year pro had one of his seven punts travel just 30 yards, while another was partially blocked and helped set up a Raiders' touchdown.

The Steelers had claimed Mesko off waivers from New England just prior to the start of the season.

McBriar, a two-time Pro Bowl selection during his tenure with Dallas from 2003-11, had been released by Philadelphia back in March. The former Australian-rules football player averaged 46.5 yards per punt in 13 games with the Eagles last season.

Over 10 NFL seasons, McBriar has averaged 45.4 yards per punt with a net of 38.0 yards.
