Brian McCain scored a touchdown with 9 seconds remaining to give Southern University a 26-23 win over Alabama State on Saturday.

The 1-yard touchdown run capped a 10-play, 73-yard drive for the Jaguars. The close call was typical for the Jaguars, as four of their past six games have been decided by a touchdown or less.

Alabama State rallied from a 19-7 deficit to take a 23-19 lead after a 5-yard run by Tim Clark, his second of the day, with 3:07 remaining in the game.

Southern (4-6, 4-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference) had built its lead with two touchdown passes from J.P.Douglas, who threw for 259 yards. Charles Hawkins was Douglas' favorite target, with seven catches for 121 yards and a touchdown.

Southern outgained Alabama State in total yards 422-362.

Clark rushed for 92 yards for Alabama State (7-3, 7-2), who have lost two of their past three games.
