Southern says player was eligible

Baton Rouge, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Southern University announced Wednesday starting left tackle Reginald Redding was eligible to play in a recent non- conference game despite his comment to the media this week.

Redding told a reporter Monday that he thought he was on a list of ineligible players but his name was overlooked last Saturday before Southern, the defending Southwestern Athletic Conference champion, hosted Northwestern State.

Southern said its certification process showed Redding was eligible to play in the game and that Redding had misinterpreted a conversation involving him and a Southern compliance officer, leading to his comment.

Redding is eligible to play the rest of the season.

Southern, which lost to Northwestern State, 51-27, to fall to 1-2, will travel to Prairie View A&M on Saturday for its first SWAC game.
